Dirty Politics

After hearing a campaign ad on WSAR by State Senate candidate Mike Coogan on how he has been the victim of dirty politics, I was surprise to see in my mailbox a postcard from the Committee to elect Mike Coogan targeting two of his opponents (Mitchell and Rodrigues) that most of us would consider dirty politics as well.

Now the information in the postcard was not news to me since these issues have been discussed at length in the local media. What caught my eye were the images that were used to describe the so called “Booze Run to New Hampshire” by State Representative Rodrigues. One image shows Rodrigues car at a state liquor store in New Hampshire while the second picture shows Rodrigues carrying a case of wine.

Now at a glance the recipient of this postcard would most likely assume that both images were taken at the same time and place. But I have been informed that the image of Rodrigues carrying a case of wine was actually taken a few years back. Upon closer inspection you can see that the label in the box is “Westport Rivers”, a local vineyard in Westport MA.

If this information is correct it shows that the Committee to elect Mike Coogan is trying to mislead and misinform the voters which makes me think that maybe Coogan might had mislead us on other issues as well.

I also found interesting that the postage for this postcard was paid in Newport RI. Why would Coogan go on a “Postage Run” to another state?

Coogan himself does not follow the law by doing construction work without permits and licenses in RI

You might want to check out his co-supporters ( with flanagan) and their tactics in past elections...there will be your answer.

I have heard that Flanagan was part of some dirty politics himself when he ran for mayor. No surprise that they are buddies.

Love how some people throw things out there with nothing to back it up, hoping it will stick. If you have something to say be specific.

I was surprised by this blatant hypocrisy from the Coogan campaign. You can't have it both ways...you sling mud, expect it to be slung back.

I am embarrassed that I considered voting for him and I went to HS with him!! He and his pals tried to destroy Correia and he has the balls to cry "not fair to my family" in his ads. #$%^ him!!!

These postcards ,newspaper and radio ads and phone calls were not produced overnight in response to some phantom smear campaign...they were obviously planned some time ago. They have a familiar stop bob ring to them...were they also paid for from the Fall River Fire Dept account?

Maybe Coogan the "non policitcian" should check ethics before accepting endorsments and sappy ads from former senators and friends of his uncle who was also in office:

Norton, Thomas C., Docket No. 448

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Docket No. 448
In the Matter of Thomas C. Norton
December 15, 1992
Disposition Agreement

This Disposition Agreement (Agreement) is entered into
between the State Ethics Commission (Commission) and Thomas C.
Norton (Senator Norton) pursuant to Section S of the Commission's
Enforcement Procedures. This Agreement constitutes a consented to
final Commission order enforceable in the Superior Court,
pursuant to G.L. c. 268B, s.4(j)

On December 12, 1990, the Commission initiated, pursuant to
G.L. c. 268B, s.4(a), a preliminary inquiry into possible
violations of the conflict of interest law, G.L. c. 268A, by
Senator Norton. On January 16, 1991, the Commission initiated a
second preliminary inquiry

Page 616

into possible violations of the financial disclosure law, G.L. c.
268B, by Senator Norton. The Commission concluded these inquiries
and, on February 19, 1992, found reasonable cause to believe that
Senator Norton had violated G.L. c. 268A and G.L. c. 268B, and
authorized the initiation of adjudicatory proceedings. On August
5, 1992, the Commission's Enforcement Division (Enforcement
Division) issued an Order to Show Cause, commencing adjudicatory
proceedings. The Order to Show Cause alleged that Senator Norton
had violated G.L. c. 268A, s.6 and s.23(b)(3), by and in
connection with his supervision of his sister during her
employment by the Senate, and G.L. c. 268B, s.7, by failing to
disclose certain information on his annual Statements of
Financial Interests filed with the Commission. On August 25,
1992, Senator Norton answered the Order to Show Cause, denying
that he had violated the law and stating several affirmative
defenses.[1]
